Getting Ready for Fall Break at Disney

In 2019, we went to Disney for our Fall Break and went to the Halloween party. It was the girls' second trip, and they were still so little, only 17 months old. We loved it, but we knew we wanted to go again! Five short months later, it felt like the world shut down suddenly, and even Disney World closed. Everything at Disney isn't fully back to pre-pandemic, but it is much closer.

The first time we could go back after they reopened was Thanksgiving week 2020. Everything was decorated for Christmas. There were giant, beautiful trees themed for each park. We had to wear masks everywhere unless we were sitting to eat. It was hard with the girls so little, but we made it work! We loved the magic of Christmas at Disney. We knew we had to go to one when Christmas parties came back!

Well, last year, the parties weren't back just yet. They had after-hours events, but they were different. When we went last October, we had the two littlest ones with us that trip and knew the after-hours event just wouldn't be what we wanted it to be, so we decided not to do the extra event. We were ecstatic when they announced that Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP) were coming back this year!

Our current plan is Fall Break this year with MNSSHP, and then next year, skip Fall Break and go for Thanksgiving again and attend MVMCP.

So this year, it's off to Disney for Fall Break!

My parents and cousin Jessica are joining us for this trip. Jessica went with us this summer for her first trip. Mom went with us in June and October last year. But Dad hasn't been since our very first trip in 2016. The girls are beyond excited that he's coming along! I think he's most excited that I'm finally riding the roller coasters (well, most of them), so he knows we'll make it a point to ride them more than he got on his first trip. I think he only got to ride one or two.

We're also really excited the girls' are finally tall enough to ride almost everything in the parks! There's only a handful of things they can't ride across all four parks combined. And we're even more excited to attend MNSSHP again this year! We are looking forward to a full week in the parks and sharing all about it, but first we've got to pack...

Ready for Fall & Halloween

So we established that I love the Fall. I love that I can wear long sleeves and sweaters and the cooler weather. I love the smells in the air, the color of the changing leaves, and Halloween.

When I say I love Halloween, I really mean I love cute, spooky Halloween. I don't do the fright and gore. But I love cutesy Halloween. I love the kids getting excited about dressing up and going trick or treating. I love doing the Truck or Treats around town.

This year, I'm excited to decorate. We've had some small decorations we've always put out, but we've gotten more. Last year, we didn't decorate because it didn't make sense since we were packing to move. We've also talked about trick-or-treating around our neighborhood this year and taking turns passing out our own candy. We've never had trick-or-treaters. Our old apartment complex was mostly college students and young adults without families, and our old house was on a hectic highway. Now that we're in a subdivision, we're excited to see what it's like here. Apparently, one of the houses puts on a tiny little carnival with games and treats.

The kiddos picked out their costumes this past weekend. Joey wasn't sure that he wanted to dress up this year. He's growing up on us. He did end up getting something to dress up a little, though. The girls are super excited about their picks. But you'll have to wait and find out what they picked in the coming weeks! Any guesses?

The Last Quarter and Random Thoughts

I don't know what it is about the cool weather, but I absolutely love it. Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons...the smells, the colors, the clothes, the weather...everything! But I don't like freezing cold temps unless there's snow. I LOVE the feel of Fall though.

Don't get me wrong, I love summer. I love there we're out of school, and we can have many adventures. And this summer, we did just that...We were literally out of town every other week this summer. We went to Disney for a week, spent a week in Athens while Joey had camp, spent a week at the beach and exploring Charleston, and then we spent a long weekend at the beach in Carrabelle.

But now it's Fall and I'm here for it. I love the last quarter of the year. As the weather changes, we're headed into my favorite time of year...the holidays. I honestly have a love-hate relationship with holidays. I don't necessarily love all of the expectations that come with each holiday, but I love spending time with Manda and the kiddos and enjoying traditions for each holiday.

Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Winter, Christmas, New Years...What's your favorite? Is it just one? What do you look forward to each year? What are traditions you and your family share?

Cha...cha...changes & the Thankful Season

It's been a hot minute since we've posted anything, but we're here! Let's catch you up on all the happenings and changes.

We finalized adoption on our beautiful twins June 2020 just as the world began opening up again from Covid shut downs. Their case was a rollercoaster of emotions even until the very end when we waited to see if we'd have a virtual hearing for adoption. We ended up being able to go to the courthouse just us two and the girls. Other family members attended via Zoom, most of them from our attorney's office just down the road.

It's hard to believe it, but Joey is a sophomore in high school now and about to start driving.

Manda is still teaching special needs Pre-K with the same program, but she moved to a new school last year. I'm teaching 6th grade math now, and I am loving my middle school kiddos! We are so incredibly thankful for our school families.

We have two littles, Bubby is 8 months old now and Lil Sis is 2 (almost 3). They've been with us since mid-May 2021. We don't know what their stories will hold in the future, but we will love on them for as long as needed.

And the newest change is...we bought a house! We've been renting, but it was beyond time to buy a home. We made the decision to start the process around mid-September, and we slept our first night in our new home on Thanksgiving night. We are still in the process of slowly unpacking.

Moving and everything right around the holidays plus having to be back at work has been quite a whirlwind. It's creating some shifts in our schedules, routines, and rhythms, and it's a bit of adjustment for sure. But we are so excited to be in our new home, and we're even more excited to decorate our new home for Christmas!

We're in the midst of creating new routines and rhythms plus coming up with a set cleaning schedule to keep a handle on everything since we almost doubled our living space.

Do you have a cleaning schedule you love? What routines and rhythms do you have in your home?

Feeling Stressed, Blessed, and a Heartbroken Mess

We have always said that everything happens for a reason. We don't always know or understand the reason or the timing, but there's always a reason.

What's the reason for the current state of our country and the world? No one knows. What I do know is that my family is beyond blessed. We are stressed; don't get me wrong, we are stressed right along with everyone else. Let me explain...

Stressed
We are stressed about potential risk of illness for our family. We're worried about the health of our loved ones. We're worried about how all of this will impact the economy in the long run. We're worried about small businesses we love, especially the dance studio our kiddos go to.

Blessed
We are blessed to be able to be home with each other and our kiddos. We are trying to be intentional with spending time together. Of course, there's constant Disney movie marathons going in our house followed by the pretty regular dance party. We're spending time together reading, coloring, and playing. We're also taking time to to plan intentional learning opportunities for the girls. We've spent time outside with riding toys, balls, and bubbles. We are blessed have jobs that are allowing us to work from home and continue to be paid. This in itself is a blessing for us. But the biggest absolute blessing for our family happened just before all of this really started when I accepted a new job just days before our world shut down.

Heartbroken Mess
We are heartbroken for our students who don't get to finish out their Pre-K year with their teachers and friends. Honestly, we're heartbroken for ourselves, because March to May is such an incredible time to be in the classroom. We're sad for how Joey's 8th grade year has been cut short. While thankfully he isn't a senior in high school this year, this is still a big transition. I remember my 8th grade year very well and cherish so many memories from the spring semester of that year. He's missing out on his 8th grade dance and end of year celebrations. We're sad that Easter will look so different this year. Though we may just have a family egg hunt a couple of weeks late. We're also sad that we can't be with our family. We can't snuggle our new little nephew and hug the necks of those we love. Video chats help a little though.

Our Adventures & Ready for Summer

Some people think we are crazy. Maybe we are a little. 😝😜

Our life is full of craziness. Our life is always busy. Our life is full of some unknown.

But honestly I couldn’t imagine our life any other way, because our life is full of love.

While everyday we live with the question of what the future holds for Sister and Sissy, we also cherish those days knowing at least for now they are in our arms. They are safe, happy, and blossoming. They’ve been with us for almost a year now. They turned a year old just yesterday. They’ve grown so much. They are walking, eating table food, and transitioning to whole milk.

Our Lil Man is not so little anymore. I can’t believe he’s 13. And he’s almost as tall as us (like .5-1 inch shorter but I’m claiming it as long as I can). He’s about to finish his 7th grade year. He has changed so much in the last year.

Manda is about to complete her first official year of teaching (4th year in the classroom). She has had a busy year with some challenges thrown her way, but she has been a champ and done an amazing job. I’m so proud of her and her dedication to her students.

This year, I have focused more on our business, but I’ve subbed some too. I’m really excited about the adventures we are embarking on together. We love our personalized apparel and gift business, ASJ Creations[link]. We love getting to create fun, custom gifts for our customers and shirts they love. In March, we embarked on another adventure! We became travel agents, and started ASJ Travels[link]. We have always enjoyed planning big vacations for our family every summer, and we love sharing our love for all things Disney with everyone we know. Now we get to help others plan the trip of their dreams to Disney destinations and beyond! We love getting to help families plan trips to anywhere they desire!

We are so ready for summer!! This is the first year that we'll all be home together all summer. We'll still be working our businesses, but we neither of us will be working outside of the house this year! We have a few trips planned for this summer including Disney and short family beach trips!

Fostering Love: The Anticipated Yet Unexpected Call

Sister, Bubba, & Sissy in Feb 2019
Feb 2019 - Sister, Bubba, & Sissy

Sister and Sissy at hospital in May 2018
May 2018 - picking up Sissy from the hospital

Time to play a little catch up! We've had a busy 9 months!

After Sweet Baby C left us, it was 18 days before we received the call for our next placement. The wait for the call was hard since we had only waited 3 days after our approval call, but we also knew that we had a packed schedule and it all would work out when it was meant to.

Well...on the afternoon of last day of school, we received the call for our next placement. 4 day old twin baby girls. Had we received the call any day before then, we wouldn't have been able to say yes because daycare isn't an option that young. The timing was perfect, and we said yes to the exciting, scary adventure we were about to face.

Baby KA (Sister) and Baby LM (Sissy) have been in our care for right at 9.5 months now. Sister was picked up from the hospital and brought to us on the day we received the call. Sissy had to stay in the hospital just a little longer. We went and picked Sissy up two days later at the hospital. Sister and Sissy met for the first time (outside of the womb) at 6 days old.

These sweet girls have changed our lives and the lives of everyone in our family. We are so blessed to be able to shower them with love.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothering people. To mother is to "bring up with care and affection" or to "look after kindly and protectively".

Today, I ask that when you are out and about or when you see your various friends' posts on social media, please remember to be kind. Mothering comes in so many forms.

Whether you have mothered through birth, adoption, fostering, or just leading and supporting, thank you for caring for and mothering others.

Fostering Love: First Goodbye

Us with Baby C

Well the time has come to say goodbye to our first placement. Sweet Baby C has left our home and gone to a relative placement. We are happy that he has family that was able to get approved and take him in. We know that being able to be with family will be good for him.

However, it doesn't make our hearts ache any less that he left. We've cried and cried some more. We expected the heart ache, but goodness you really can't prepare yourself for it.

As we prepared for his departure and since, we've made it a point to put away things that were kept behind. Things like some toys, play pen, bottles, etc. that were ours. It has helped to not have these things still laying around as reminders that he left. Lil Man has been an emotional wreck this week as he doesn't do well with emotions, and he was really smitten with Baby C.

Honestly, we're looking forward to more placements. We know we'll get a call in the near future.

Did you know the state of Georgia has over 15,000 children in foster care? You can help by becoming a foster parent, becoming a relative placement (if you have a relative in care), becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), or just reaching out to your local DFCS for information on volunteer opportunities.

Fostering Love: First Placement Call

Baby C has been with us for 2 weeks now. Yep that's right 2 weeks! Let's rewind a little...

So as you know, we received the call that we were approved on April 9th. Well on April 12th I received a voicemail while I was at my afternoon car duty at school. It was from our new foster parent case manager. She was introducing herself and letting us know they had a potential placement. As she said, "Yes, it really does happen that fast."

I mean wow! 3 days?!?! Granted, we were comping at the bit waiting for a call, because we know there's such a high need. But honestly, we didn't think the call would come that fast. And we thought for sure we would have to have the transition meeting before we received a call, but nope!

I instantly text Manda to get her to reach out for more info since I was still at work for my after school tutoring. She called me and said they had an 8 month old little boy, and we knew instantly that he would be the perfect fit for our first placement.

Once he was dropped off that evening, we headed to Wal-Mart to grab some necessities that we didn't have at home yet. Then we when home, snuggled, and got ready for Friday. Friday meant he had to start daycare. We definitely had some adjusting to do with our schedule, but we're figuring it out.

Like I said we received the call on April 12th. He's been with us for 2 weeks now. We're still somewhat adjusting to life with an infant, but it's definitely starting to feel more routine. We're all so in love with this sweet baby boy.

Lil Man has stepped up and is already a great big brother. The boys are both smitten with each other. Baby C adores Lil Man so much. Baby C really has just fit his way into our lives perfectly. We already fear the day that he may have to leave us. We keep reminding ourselves that's what we signed up for, but it doesn't make it any less scary. But one thing is for sure, as long as he's with us we will love him and spoil him rotten!

Fostering Love: Journey to Approval

It's been a while, but we are so excited to start sharing an exciting journey with you! See, fostering is something that we have talked about for a long time. We always said that it would be hard to love them and lose them. We also said we'd probably do it after we had more kids of our own and they were older. I'm going to share a brief (super brief) snapshot of our journey from inquiry to approval.

Sometime in early 2017, a friend (who was already a foster parent) shared a couple of things about foster care. First, she shared the numbers for our county. At the time, we had less than 20 DFCS foster homes and nearly 200 children in our county that were in state custody. Later, she shared a post that was basically "If you've ever said _____ about becoming a foster parent, you'd be perfect" and it was a list of 3-5 bullet points. We realized then that it wasn't about how much it would hurt us when they left, it's more about the love we can give them while they're with us. That's when we decided to find out more about the process.

On May 15, 2017, we attended a prospective foster parent information meeting. It was a brief session where they told us what we could expect of the process and more about the need in our county. We were able to complete our IMPACT pre-service training classes in June 2017. All that left was finishing up the paperwork and home visits.

We finished up all of our visits in late fall and had our last bit of paperwork submitted in early January. The sub-contractor that wrote our home study report submitted it to our county DFCS at the end of January. Now it was time for three people to review the home study and gives us the final decision. Our case manager had to come out and take a few more pictures of the house per her supervisor's request. Then just more waiting.

After nearly eleven months after we started the process, we received the call on April 9, 2018 (two weeks ago) that we were approved. Our case manager said that our new case manager would be reaching out soon to set up a transition meeting so that we could begin accepting placements. Receiving that call brought so many emotions. We had waited for this, and now the time was finally here!

Book Review: Habit Changers by M.J. Ryan

I've heard good things about M.J. Ryan's books, but I hadn't ever read any of them. Well, I grabbed this book up and started reading! Habit Changers is a book full of mantras and advice to help you reach your goals in life.

Ryan organized the book of mantras by categories such as acceptance, communication, prioritization, self-care, and so much more. Seriously, she thought of it all. And it really works let me tell you!

Manda and I were excited when the book delivered, and we cracked it open to see what it was all about. We explored the whole book at first, but then we decided to pick a couple of mantras to focus on for a little while.

The first one we chose was in the 'Happiness' category: "Change it, leave it, or accept it." This one really hit home for us, because there are some things we haven't been happy with in our lives. We kept repeating this mantra to ourselves, and it really has helped make a difference. We changed up and rearranged our whole house thanks to this mantra, and we have been so much happier with our living space as a result!

The second one we chose came from the 'Procrastination' section: "All you need is the first action." We are both so bad about procrastinating! Do you ever feel like you don't know what to do when you have a long to do list or large project looming over you?! This is us! But I can say this mantra really helped me. When I would start feeling anxious about something I had to do and trying to figure out all of the steps, I would remind myself that I only needed the first step.

I really enjoyed this book as not only does Ryan provide the mantras, but she shares stories of clients she has worked with (or personal stories of herself) and how these mantras have helped.

Have you read Habit Changers? If so, share your favorite mantra and/or how it helped you below in the comments! If not, I definitely recommend it! Let us know if you decide to check it out!

Hello August: Let's Crush Some Goals

I honestly cannot believe it is August 1st! For us this marks the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. I can't believe how fast summer passed (or the past 7 months for that matter). I'm excited to take on the next five months though! New month, new vision, new goals! Let's do this!

August 2016 Goals

- Read more - We bought all 3 of us Kindle Fires on Prime Day. We also joined a group on GoodReads that does a group read as well as yearly, quarterly, and monthly challenges. We also want to spend more time doing some silent reading with Lil Man. He has worked really hard to complete his annual 100 book summer challenge, but we want to make sure he sees us reading too.

- Get Organized & Stay Organized - This is a never ending goal for us. My ADD and anxiety battle each other on this front. I either 1)can't seem to focus long enough to get organized, 2) can't focus on it long enough for it to become a habit, or 3) come up with something too complicated for my ADD brain to stick to doing. Then when things are chaotic my anxiety kicks in and I have to dig myself out. I want to actually finish setting up our "command center" we started in January.

Focus on School - For us and Lil Man, I want to make sure we're focused on school better than we were in the spring. It's time to buckle down. Lil Man is starting 5th grade this year and we're starting our 3rd semester for our Masters degree.

- Learn to Sew - We got a sewing machine for Christmas a couple of years ago. I've always wanted to learn how to sew. Well we finally opened the box. Yes, we've had it for couple of years still sealed in the top of a closet. But now it's open and we picked up some scrap fabric, so it's time to get started.

- Leave Work at Work - Ok, so this one is a hard one for me, but I'm really trying. I have too much other stuff to accomplish to keep working endlessly for someone else.

- Be Consistent (with Our Side Gigs & Hobbies) - So I want to be more consistent in life overall, but especially in our side gigs and hobbies. I want to post on here more. I want to continue to build my R + F business. I also want us to continue to focus on growing our TpT store and that blog. We also just opened an Etsy store, and I'd like to maybe start a blog for that too.

- Be More Social/Network More - This is both a personal goal and professional/side gig goal. We have no social life. It's work, school, and dance for us; so I want to spend more time with people we care about. I also want to spend more time networking with other bloggers, teacher-authors, and Etsy shop owners.

- Screen-free Family Time - I want to make it a point to take time for some screen-free family time amidst our crazy schedules.

Well there you have it. There's my August goals! Some of these goals will carry over into other months and some will become more specific as time goes on.

What are your goals this month?

The Anxiety Sufferer's Guide to Holiday Gatherings

The holidays can be an absolutely magical time of year. However, it can also be a very stressful time of the year, especially if you already suffer from anxiety. Let me say, I love holidays and I love the idea of holiday gatherings. I really do love the holiday season, but sometimes my anxiety can take over and make holiday gatherings insufferable.

Let's face it, even if you don't experience anxiety throughout the rest of the year, the holidays can be stressful. Gift buying, travel plans, logistics of get-togethers, small talk...the list goes on.

Holiday family gatherings are a huge stress point. You're getting ready. Did I wrap all the presents? Did I forget anyone? What should I wear? Did I wear this last year? Will it be hot or cold in the house? How long does it take to get there? What time should I leave? Should I arrive early? Who all will be there this year?

You arrive and find yourself making small talk with your irritating lovely family members. Maybe it's your uncle who is just socially unacceptable, your grandmother who is the ultimate scrooge, your sibling who's short fuse could cause an explosion at any moment, or maybe it's your sweet aunt who is overly concerned with the details of your life.

Finally, dinner is ready. Do you fix your plate first or do you wait until others start? Who do you sit beside? For my family, we have to strategically place people at the dinner table to relieve individual stressors. What will the topics of discussion be at the table? Will someone get upset?

You make it through dinner, with or without a hitch; it's over. Now it's time to exchange presents. Who passes out presents? Who opens first or does everyone open at once? Is anyone paying attention? Did I spend enough or too much? Does he/she like my present? Wait, what did my face look like when I opened that gift?

You pulled through the present exchanges. More small talk? When do I leave? Do I leave first or wait until someone else leaves? Do I want to take leftovers?

Now you're home. Did I leave too early? Did he/she really like my gift? Was I smiling when I opened sweet aunt's odd gift?

Does any of this sound familiar? Most, if not all, of these go through my head before, during, and after every holiday gathering. I constantly feel like I'm on the verge of an anxiety attack.

Here's some ways to deal with some of the holiday gathering stressors:

Stay busy. If waiting around and mingling is a concern for you, keep yourself busy. Ask your host if you can help with something. Or maybe you can get some quality time in with the little ones of the family.

The small talk. Whether in moments of waiting, at the table, or whenever; all small talk cannot always be avoided. Think of some ways to compliment family members and ways to respond to compliments. Also, think about how you can respond to those prying questions ahead of time so that you don't have to have a mini panic attack in your head when they're asked.

Dinner and leftovers. If this is an issue for you, think about how you can handle it. If your host doesn't have a seating arrangement, then before dinner, decide who you can sit beside. Do you want leftovers? Maybe you know you won't eat them, but you can't make yourself tell your well-meaning host "no thanks." It's ok to take a small helping of leftovers you may not eat to avoid a stressful inner debate.

The gifts. Thankfully, my family has now set a dollar limit on how much we spend on each other (just the adults), so the stress of whether I spent the same, more, or less is not a concern anymore. Discuss with your family about setting a per person spending limit. We have the kids pass out the gifts from under the tree. And we either go from youngest to oldest; take turns youngest, oldest, next youngest, next oldest; or pass out and open one gift at a time. It's best to discuss it with you family and decide beforehand if possible.

Support. Do you have a significant other or close family member who understands you? Or maybe you can bring a friend? Have a support system in place to help calm your nerves. If you don't have someone that can be there with you, arrange with friend or other family member to be able to text or call them when you need a break.

Don't wait. You know what it feels like when you're on the verge of an anxiety attack. You also know signs that your anxiety is setting in. (Although sometimes, it hits too quickly to realize it beforehand.) Ahead of time, think about strategies you use on a regular basis to calm yourself. As soon as you feel your anxiety building, put them to use. Take deep breaths, close your eyes, walk outside or to another room, visualize your "happy place," or whatever helps you.

Look for the positive. Even if you have a lot of holiday stressors, there is something that you enjoy about your family get-togethers. Keep reminding yourself that it's coming. Or when you've made it through a particularly stressful situation, reward yourself. Maybe that means a mental praise of yourself, a goofy grin, or an extra piece of pie; just do it.

Plan ahead. One of the biggest ways to help make those holiday get-togethers less stressful is to plan ahead as much as possible. In stead of waiting until the day of to plan your outfit and travel times, do it the day or even the week before the event. If you're afraid to wear the same outfit as last year, then look back at last year's pictures before planning your outfit. Or treat yourself to a new snazzy outfit. Most all of the other stressor topics above can be helped with some pre-planning as well.

Now, that's not to say that you need to try to plan every single small detail of the event to avoid all of your stressors. Just focus on your major stress points and plan those details. For the rest, just think over the possibilities to help calm yourself as needed.

And when it's over, instead of stressing about what you think went wrong, just focus on all of the good parts. You made it through it. Now, take a deep breath and relax.

What holiday stressors do you have?
How do you deal?

I'm a person, not a label.

I've never been one to like the labels that society puts on people. Maybe it's because society chooses to put so many on my life. I've also never been one to bare my thoughts and feelings for all to hear/see. But I've recently had to come to terms with adding more societal labels to my collection. Maybe it's just all the drama going on in my life and in the world, but I'm just tired of just being a set of labels.

I've dealt with labels my entire life; truly, we all do. Let's face it, I was the fifteen year old who had a baby out of wedlock. I was a single mother, a slut, a whore; the list goes on. In reality, I was just a naive girl with a really interesting and twisted fate. The looks, the whispers; it's something I learned to deal with and pretended they didn't get to me. I've come a long way from those days, and I proved all of those people wrong the day I walked across the stage at my college graduation.

Now, I'm married to the love of my life, who happens to be a woman just as I am.Therefore society says I'm a lesbian. Better yet, we're told we break away from the "stereotypical lesbian." What does even that mean? What's a "stereotypical" lesbian? What you mean because we don't have short hair and wear masculine clothes? Have these people met many lesbians? So now we must have yet another label: feminine or "fem". On the flip-side, what these same people supposedly call "stereotypical lesbians" are given even more labels: butch or dyke. I hate when someone looks at me, after finding out I'm married to a woman, and says, "Oh, I didn't know, you don't look like a lesbian." Or wait for it..."Who's the guy in your relationship?" Umm...do you know the dictionary definition of a lesbian? Yes? No? Let me enlighten you, we're both women.

Everyday society places labels upon us based on our beliefs, our feelings, our attitude, our choices, and things completely out of our control.

Society has added that I am ADHD, I have anxiety, and I'm depressed. Let's add more: I'm a failure, attention seeking, worthless...where do the labels end? It's time we quit looking at the labels and begin looking at the person.

Thankfully, our little man does not see labels. See our little man has a very diverse group of friends both in gender and ethnicity; he has ever since he started daycare at three. Maybe we could all learn a little from our children. We aren't born with these prejudices; it's learned.

Last year, like me, our little man was diagnosed with ADHD. We struggled with his diagnosis and the thought of putting him on medication for a while. Thankfully, we did and he has benefited greatly from it. We were also told that he hits closely to being diagnosed with Asperger's because he hit 6/15 markers on the Autism scale. And he has a speech impairment due to improper articulation. Now...you might think that this child I'm describing is a hyper, loner child who does poorly in school. That's not the case though. We don't use his "disabilities" as an excuse. No he makes straight A's in school. He made a perfect score on the state math test last year and did very well in the other subject areas. He is currently being tested for the gifted program at school. This same child dances and acts. (Whoa, the labels that can come from those alone.) He has friends. Yes, he is socially awkward at times. Yes, he has moments of high activity and lack of focus. But he's still a child. He's a ten year old boy. He's our son. None of those other labels matter at the end of the day.

One of the biggest fights we have to conquer first is being more than our labels. Don't let the labels that society places on you define or change who you know yourself as.

My challenge for you: Start seeing the person instead of the label.

Head Spinning

Wow! It has been almost 10 months since I've been on here! My head is absolutely spinning out of control right now. Here's a short and condensed version of the last 10 months...

Vlogs--We dropped the ball a long time ago! Oops! It's a whole lot harder to keep up with the vlogs with our schedules than we thought it would be. I really hope we can get back to them very soon!

Lil Man--He is having a great year in 3rd grade! We ended up visiting a adolescent behavioral specialist in late Sept after some concerns. He has since been diagnosed with ADHD and is on medication. We were very hesitant to go the medication route and stressed long and hard over it. It has helped him so much in the early part of his day. He is able to concentrate during his reading and writing time in class which has always been the biggest struggle areas for him academically. We're beginning to notice that it may be negatively effecting him in the later part of the day and making it harder for him to concentrate. We go back for his 3 month follow-up in Jan. His specialist also mentioned that he hits on 6 out of 15 markers for the Aspergers/Autism spectrum leaving him in a very grey area. He could grow out of them or they could increase in prevalence. He is going to a speech class for 30 mins (1 day per week) to work on his "r" sound. Overall, we still have a very happy, loving 9 year old! He has really developed a love for independent reading this year, and we are so happy to see that! He is growing so much in his writing as well! We're so excited for him and the academic strives he has made so far this school year!

Dance--He finished out his first competition year in June in Panama City Beach, FL. He came in as first runner-up for National Mr. Petite Dance. He had a great first year with his solo! Things are in full swing again! He's in the studio for 8 hours a week (or more lately with recital coming up). This week is recital week! We have 2 days of dress rehearsal then Saturday is show day with 2 shows! As far as competition this year, he is doing a new solo and a duet. He is so excited about his duet partner. She is one of the sweetest little girls, and they became really good friends last year. After recital on Saturday, we're taking Sunday for a rest, then we're hitting these competition dances full force! The first competition is Valentine's weekend.

Work--Manda is still at TJMaxx. Her schedule is crazy, insane as always. Especially right now because it's holiday season in retail. She's still looking for and hoping to find a teaching position!

I started as a half-time Special Ed teacher/half-time EIP tutor in late Sept. There is good and bad to it, but on most days I love my job! It's definitely nothing short of interesting!

Home/General Life--We adopted a cat last Oct (as seen in vlogs) and then we took in a stray a few months ago in August. We are so ready to start looking for a house. The search begins late Jan/early Feb! I'm still staying crazy busy with lesson planning, IEP meetings, tutoring, coach Road Runners, running Lil Man to dance, and wedding planning. There's not enough time in the day! I've seriously considered hiring a part-time nanny! Especially, since we're getting ready to add on to our lil family next year!

Wedding Planning--We are only 24 days away!! AHHH!! I feel like there's still so much to get done! And the budget continues to grow and the money available continues to shrink! Ugh talk about stress! But we are so excited to have our wedding on our 6th anniversary. It's been a long time coming, and we're so ready for it! It's so exciting and nerve racking all at the same time!

Time Flies By...

I'm sitting here in the hotel room after a long day at the dance comp. I have some ADD tendencies going on tonight. I'm exhausted, but I can't sleep...guess I'll write the blog post I've been meaning to write for a while now.

It's hard to believe that it is already February 22nd (well 23rd now)! I'm excited and nervous about what this next year will [hopefully] means for us. I want so much to happen, but wow time is flying already! We're so excited for what this year has already brought us, and we can't wait to see what happens by this time next year.

I've set goals for us for the next 2 years...within the next 2 years I want for us both to be in full teaching positions (hopefully by August) then all the rest will come...wedding, baby, house, and SUV. Not in that order necessarily. We've been wanting to plan our wedding for quite some time (2.5 years to be exact), but it just hasn't been in the cards just yet. We have a date set, and we're really hoping to keep it! Baby...well let's face it, we're not getting any younger and neither is Lil Man. He's already 8! We've always known we wanted more kids, and we're ready to start the process to build our family. House...I love our apartment, and it's been great so far. Let's face it though, we really want to be in a house. We would like to buy a house if we can find one we really love, but we're ok with renting until we do. Plus adding on to the family would be so much less crowded in a house. We don't have enough room as it is in the apartment. SUV...so many reasons. First of all, I have just always wanted an SUV. Which is partly why my parents got me a hatchback for graduation back in 2008. With Lil Man's dance stuff, I've decided we need more room to pack! And with wanting to add a baby to the mix...my little two-door car just isn't going to cut it!

Speaking of time flying by...we haven't been doing so well keeping our vlogs updated. I promise we will get them updated soon! We have quite a few to get posted. There's our Twister Challenge, a visit from my wonderful sister and baby niece, snow days, our Chattanooga (dance comp) trip, and who knows what else. We've been staying extremely busy. Lil Man is always at the studio working hard. Manda is always at work, and she's getting ready to go out of town next week (ahhh!). I feel like I'm never home, and when I am I have no extra time. After school while Lil Man is at dance, I am tutoring privately and through the school system for extra money, working on our TpT store, planning a race event for the run club I coach at school, and working on an online class.

So please bear with us :) I promise we're still around, and we'll post vlogs soon!

It all pays off...

The hours of practice and tons of money spent on preparing his dance to take the stage finally paid off this weekend! We finally got to see him take this dance to the competition stage! We are so proud of him and all the dancers from his studio. This season is off to a great start already, and we can't wait to see where it goes from here!

Realizing Your Little Man is Growing Up

It's hard when you realize your little one is growing up! Tonight our Little Man is at a lock-in at the dance studio. All the company kids are there to find out who their Big/Little is for the season! He was super excited. Manda and I were both super nervous. He's never spent the night away with anyone other than family, and he's barely done that. He just prefers to be at home.

While we're both having a hard time with him not being at home, we are glad that he's able to have these type of experiences. He's so excited to be a part of the company team this year, but it's been hard for him to feel super involved because we're not at the studio for the company practices with him only doing a solo.

I can't wait to pick him up in the morning and hear all about his night!
